Reviewing Courses Using the QLT Instrument Testimonials

Thinking back on the learning journey in this course, what is one piece of advice or tip you would give to another instructor taking this course? Why is this important?

  • I agree that the QLT review process is about making the communicative process of an asynchronous course clear. All the pieces are equally important in the process. Clarity is key!
  • This course was very helpful in helping me think about all the pieces that make a course effective in an asynchronous environment.
  • The 5-minute rule, the student perspective, determining if an objective was met or not, and writing effective recommendations, all made me take a closer look at my own courses and think about what I could modify to improve the student experience and provide more clarity.
  • The module on effective feedback was very educational, helping me better assess my own courses.
  • I really enjoyed taking the Q2 course and found all the modules were extremely helpful. Although I do not teach any courses, I do support them, and knowing how to make a quality course will help me support my faculty.
  • The discussions on peer review assignments were incredibly valuable to me to understand the different perspectives on how to interpret the objectives, and thus make a more effective evaluation. Responses to my evaluation comments, too, were especially helpful in getting me to see a more complete picture of establishing an evaluation.
  • The feedback comments from my peers and the responses really helped clarify what I was missing to make that judgment call.
  • I truly appreciated assessing a class as an outsider which made me rethink my own course design and how important that first module (Welcoming/ start here) is.
  • One of the things I struggled with most was deciding whether or not an objective was a “1” or a “2,” but the real takeaway of these exercises is the discussions that occur afterward. Like any grading rubric, numbers can only say so much. When you finally sit and converse about the work with a QLT colleague via discussion forums—or later, when you discuss with a colleague whose course you’re reviewing—that’s really where the learning and support occurs.
  • This course has been great for allowing us to dig deeper into the Rubric and look at it from a reviewer and student perspective.
  • Reviewing with the QLT Rubric really forced me to think about how these key course components are connected and should be aligned. Alignment is a simple but powerful concept and I feel like it helps students feel like everything in their course is intentional and has a purpose.
  • Prior to taking this course I felt confident looking at how each weekly objective was supported by readings/activities but often forgot to look at the course as a whole. This course highlighted the importance of observing the entire journey the student goes through the alignment process.
