This presentation was updated from passive to an active learning activity using a Ted-Ed lesson which includes: Watch, Think, Dig Deeper and Discuss. Aspects to the video lesson to encourage more engagement with the video before and during class. I particularly like the opportunity to link the questions to a section of the video as well as the opportunity to seek student input in short-answer questions. Ted-Ed was user friendly and its application is broad.

Teaching Race & Racism and Perspectives on Gender means that there will be many different points of view and some may even be contentious. To help facilitate a safe and respectful learning environment the Diversity Statement is included in the Syllabus and on Blackboard. This statement is reviewed together as a class to promote understanding and mutual consideration.

Many times students request extra credit and as faculty members, we struggle to provide that. This is a weekly discussion posting on Blackboard based on the face to face lecture for that week. Having a discussion post creates an environment for students to engage freely outside the classroom. At times, I have also used this to engage students during class time and have them bring out their electronic device answer the discussion posting for attendance purposes and extra credit for that day!
